It’s been an expensive year in Missouri for disasters.

Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance Director Angela Nelson says there have been 137-thousand property insurance claims so far. We’re seeing that these weather events for this year so far year to date are quickly approaching. What we anticipate will be $2 billion that will ultimately be paid out by insurance companies. Nelson says that does not include commercial property claims. She says Missourians can expect to pay more for insurance in the future, but she says the state’s insurance market remains strong and competitive. She says insurance companies base their rates on average payouts over a 3-to-5 year period. She notes, as costly as 2025 has been, the amount of damage is still below 2011, the year of the deadly Joplin tornado, which caused nearly $3 (B) billion in damages.
